The Dano Show - A Trip Through Radio History

Dan “Dano” Stevens began his full-time radio career in the summer of 1989 at just fourteen years old, working at WCCW AM/FM. What followed was a broadcasting career spanning more than three decades, multiple markets, nearly every job inside a radio station, and more than a few stories that probably could not happen in today’s corporate radio industry.

Over the years, Dano worked as an air personality, morning host, program director, operations manager, production director, engineer, chief operator, copywriter and station manager, often wearing several of those hats at the same time. His career eventually took him through numerous stations and markets, including years with Regent Broadcasting and Townsquare Media in Grand Rapids.

After leaving corporate radio, however, things became considerably less conventional.

Rock 104.9 Grand Rapids appeared on the actual FM dial as an unauthorized pirate station broadcasting on 104.9 MHz. It was not a tiny bedroom transmitter barely reaching the end of the street. From a site east of downtown Grand Rapids, the signal covered the city and traveled remarkably well along the I-196 corridor, reaching as far west as Holland.

The station quickly became a word-of-mouth curiosity. Students at Grand Valley State University, Davenport College and several of the area’s Christian colleges discovered it. People talked about it on message boards and early social media. Rock 104.9 became known for heavy rock, alternative music, Slipknot, unfiltered commentary and the kind of language unlikely to survive a corporate programming meeting.

Then came one of the stranger chapters in the station’s history.

Listeners inside the Kent County Correctional Facility discovered that Rock 104.9 was one of the few FM signals that penetrated the building reliably. Before long, the station had developed a genuine audience inside the jail. Nightly collect calls from inmates to the request line occasionally became an unexpected and often hilarious part of the evening show.

Years later, life supplied the punch line.

During a brief stay of his own inside the Kent County Jail following what he jokingly describes as an “oopsie daisy,” several inmates kept telling Dano that his voice sounded familiar. Eventually they placed him from his years on WGRD.

Then somebody asked him if he remembered “that pirate station on the east side that used to play Slipknot and cuss all the time.”

Dano extended his hand.

“Hi. Dano. Pleasure to meet you.”

They lost their minds. The most awkward "Holy Sh**!" moment.

Apparently, Rock 104.9 had achieved something approaching legendary status among some of the people who had listened from inside the facility, especially with his raw anger-filled rants about Kent County's local politics and Sheriff's Department. Suddenly Dano was being treated like a minor celebrity and showered with the unofficial currency of county jail: ramen noodles and honey buns.

Of all the broadcasting honors he never received, being declared a hero by a jail cell block because his pirate radio station played Slipknot and occasionally dissolved into obscenity-filled on-air meltdowns remains one of his favorites.

Eventually, Rock 104.9 left its pirate-radio chapter behind. The attitude did not.

As traditional radio changed through consolidation, automation and increasingly centralized programming, Dano became convinced that the future of personality-driven radio was moving online. Rather than trying to recreate terrestrial radio exactly as it had been, he began combining what he believed worked best about radio from the 1980s, ’90s and 2000s with modern streaming, digital distribution, social media and high-quality audio delivery.

That evolution produced several projects, including 108 JAMZ, WBFE Traverse City and, ultimately, Rock 104.9 Detroit.

Today, Rock 104.9 Detroit represents the culmination of more than thirty-seven years of broadcasting experience, engineering, programming, production and a stubborn refusal to accept that radio has to sound sterile.

The station blends the best rock from the ’90s to now with personality, local content, listener interaction, news, weather, specialty programming and an intentionally uncensored edge. It reaches listeners in Detroit, Traverse City and increasingly around the world through streaming platforms, mobile apps and radio directories.

Dano remains deeply involved in virtually every part of the operation. He is the sole owner, Operations Manager, Program Director, Chief Engineer and air personality for Rock 104.9 Detroit — along with whatever other title needs filling before something catches fire again...

He has spent most of his life believing that radio should feel alive, unpredictable and human.

He also reportedly enjoys waffles, claims to live somewhere cold as a penguin with his mate, and has at least once been quoted as saying, “Penguin sex is hot.”

Some things are better left unexplained.
